How to manually migrate Transtool custom dictionary to a new computer

Purpose

  • Scope: Instructions how to copy/migrate a ".pws" and a ".custom" custom dictionary to a new computer
  • Intended audience: External translators

Migration instructionsIf you have a custom dictionary with the “.pws” filename extension on your old computer you can:

  1. Copy that file to your new computer.
  2. Then on the new computer open a transtool file.
  3. Go to the menu “Tools -> Custom dictionary -> File -> Open”.
  4. And select the .pws file.

Also check the folder on the old computer where Transtool (ttw10.exe) was installed. There should be a folder called “hunspell” and in that a folder called “dict”. If you have added words while previously spellchecking there will be a file with the “.custom” filename extension, for example “Transtool\hunspell\dict\es-ES.custom”. You can open it in a text editor to see the saved words.

  1. Copy that file to your new computer.
  2. Install the spellchecker in Transtool in the menu “Spellcheck -> Spellcheck settings -> Use Hunspell -> Download more dictionaries”. Now you should find a “hunspell\dict” folder on your new computer in the same folder where Transtool (ttw10.exe) is installed.
  3. Copy the “es-ES.custom” file to the “dict” folder on the new computer.
  4. The custom dictionary can now be used and all the previously added terms are saved to the new machine.
