Neural machine translation, based on artificial intelligence (AI), is today’s common machine translation (MT) method. The result is fluent translations which can be produced cost-effectively and quickly in many languages. However, fluency is not accuracy. Currently, MT systems are not able to deliver completely consistent and error-free translations and can struggle to capture cultural nuances or marketing messages appropriately for its purpose.
The raw MT output, without any subsequent human optimization, is best suited to content that simply needs to be understood, without worrying whether it will affect your brand’s image, and in cases where speed is the most important factor.
In cases where reliable, accurate translation is needed, machine-translated texts must be checked and edited by professional translators. This process is called MTPE "Machine Translation Post-Editing" and is a service that combines the speed of MT, with the expertise and sensitivity of human linguists.
The Best Mix of Speed and Quality
There are two service levels of post-editing (PE) to meet the required level of quality. The raw MT output is either “light” or “full” edited by a professional human translator, depending on the particular requirements of the project.
In light post-editing, the editor focuses only on basic essentials ensuring that the translation is understandable and factually accurate. No changes are made to the style.
Full post-editing is a more detail-oriented process where the editor, besides checking the spelling, grammar, syntax and punctuation, aims to provide a completely accurate translation with consistently correct terminology and appropriate tone and style.
